AN INSPIRATIONAL cancer campaigner from Bangor has been posthumously recognised with an ITV Wales award.

Irfon Williams’ efforts to help cancer patients in Wales saw him raise over £150,000 to support patients on Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital's Alaw Unit, through the north Wales NHS charity, Awyr Las.

The 46-year-old was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2014 and passed away in May of this year.

However, to recognise his efforts, ITV Wales politics programme "Sharp End" have named him their People’s Campaigner for 2017 in their annual Welsh Politician of the Year Awards.

Presenting the award, ITV Wales’ political editor Adrian Masters said that it was Mr Williams’ campaign for better access to cancer drugs in Wales that earned him the prize.

His widow Rebecca was on hand to receive the award during the ceremony held in Cardiff last week and spoke of her pride for her late husband.

"‘I am incredibly proud of Irfon in what he achieved." she said.

"He was truly determined to make sure no other person found themselves being denied a treatment in Wales that was available over the border."

Mrs Williams explained that Mr Williams' story affected and inspired several people throughout Wales.

"The Hawl i Fyw campaign was not just a success due to Irfon’s tenacity but also thanks must be given to the tens of thousands who supported the campaign around the world." she continued.

"These include the Welsh Rugby team, Gareth Bale and Welsh Singers re recording the Dafydd Iwan song ‘Hawl i Fyw".
