A CINEMA on Anglesey has announced that it will be closing its doors 'until further notice'.

The Empire Cinema in Holyhead has cited technical issues as its reason for the announcement.

The building, owned by the Holyhead Town Council, will not be able to re-open until problems with the projector have been resolved.

A spokesperson for the Town Council said: “We have had some issues with the projector in the last couple of months as some might be aware, we did have it fixed but the issue has since returned.

“We have taken the decision to have a whole new projection system installed and we are working on this now.

“We can not sell tickets or let anyone view a film knowing the projector is malfunctioning.”

The Empire, first opened in 1920, has faced continuous problems in recent years.

However, after years of uncertainty, the town council stepped in to save the facility, purchasing a 25-year lease on the building.

Following a £460,000 investment in 2013, the cinema looked to be back on its feet and started to grow in popularity.

In 2016, it was revealed that 150,000 film lovers had visited the cinema since its re-opening and plans to introduce a second screen had been discussed in detail.

Anyone who has recently purchased tickets to watch a film at Empire are being told to get in touch to discuss refunds.

The Town Council hope that the issue can be resolved within a "week or two at most".
