A BANGOR percussion group is hoping to drum up enthusiasm for its new beginner drum sessions.

Batala Bangor, a Samba-Reggae drumming group, has organised a new schedule for learners to be held in Tregarth during March.

Those who sign up will be taught exercises, basic techniques, an introduction to the instruments and musical style as well as learn to play as part of a group.

Batala is a form of Samba Drum music which originated from Salvador de Bahia in North Eastern Brazil.

It was formed as the European wing of Cortejo Afro, a style of Brazilian Samba, by Giba Gonçalves in Paris in 1997.

Batala Bangor was started in 2003, the second UK Batala group, which exists to play Giba’s music.

The group has since gone on to be a mainstay of the North Wales summer carnival scene and is regularly seen at community events, private gigs, parties and weddings.

Batala World won the Notting Hill Carnival Samba Category in 2016!

"This is a very special time to join Batala Bangor as we celebrate 15 years since the group started. It's a chance to sign up and be part of the celebrations." Said Bryn Davies, the group's musical director.

People attending must be able to commit to all three of the sessions 12noon until 4pm, on Saturday, March 10, Saturday, March 17 and Saturday, March 24.

Sessions are at the Tregarth Community Centre, LL57 4AW, and the cost is £2.50/ per person per session.

"Don’t miss this great opportunity to be a part of Batala Bangor and join us on our gig season for 2018. Being part of the band is great fun and performing for an audience at gigs is exhilarating and rewarding,” Bryn added.
