A MOTORCYCLIST was arrested after failing the roadside drugs test during a road safety operation on Anglesey last night.

Following a stop check on Victoria Road, Holyhead, on Wednesday, March 21, a 39-year-old local man was arrested after testing positive for cannabis at the roadside.

Police report he also had no licence, no insurance, no MOT and was carrying a pillion. He was taken to police custody and has since been released under investigation pending the results of further tests. He will also be dealt with for the motoring offences.

During the operation, which involved officers from the Roads Policing Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Unit, a 56-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after failing the roadside breath test. He later passed the breath test procedure in police custody.

Three vehicles were seized under Section 165 and a van driver was dealt with as he was carrying passengers in what a police spokesperson say was "a dangerous manner" after they were found in the back of the van where there were no seats.

One driver was dealt with after being spotted driving without a seatbelt and several other vehicles were checked whereby nine VDRs (Vehicle Defect Rectification) were issued for a variety of offences including defective lights and a defective windscreen.

PC Gerallt Williams from the Roads Policing Unit said: "These results show why we continue to carry out road safety operations. Unfortunately we continue to deal with irresponsible drivers who fail to abide by the law by driving under the influence of drugs and drink.

"Although a man was later released after passing the breath test procedure in custody, he still took a risk by driving after drinking alcohol.

"This operation was done as part of our ongoing commitment to keeping the roads safe for all and to provide a high visibility reassurance to our communities and we will continue to take action against drivers who commit offences on our roads."
