A GWYNEDD-BASED football club, made famous by a hit comedy series on S4C, is to return to its once-famous pitch next season after a six year absence.

The historic Mountain Rangers FC, based in the village of Rhosgadfan near Caernarfon, were formed in the 1920's but ceased to exist in 2012 when the senior squad resigned from the Gwynedd League.

The club itself became well-known throughout north Wales when it's pitch, Cae Gors, featured in the popular S4C football-based comedy 'C'mon Midffild' during the 90s.

Now, Martin Jones, a local football enthusiast and chairman of the new club, has worked alongside other members of the community to set up a plan to get their famous black and white stripes back on the field again.

The 43-year-old says that the steps being taken for the new club will see Junior teams formed first, the likes of which have not been seen for the past 18 years in Rhosgadfan.

"Following a conversation between myself and my brother-in-law, we found that there was a lack of junior teams around here, meaning that kids from the area have to play for teams based five to ten miles away," Mr Jones explained.

"So, we decided to give it a go, and we wrote up a five year plan, recruited committee members to the team, as well as officials and we are now just aiming to start the club from scratch."

Once introduced next season, the plan will see Junior sides ranging from Under 5 to Under 9 age groups set up in the area and competing in the Gwyrfai Junior League.

Organisers also hope that a girls team can be set up next year and aim to have a senior side back up and running for the Gwynedd League's 2019/20 season.

"Once the senior side is set up, it will be made up of youth players, to try and bridge the gap from junior to senior football with help from some experienced campaigned players," Mr Jones explained.

"Above all, we want to give the young people living in our community the chance to play football once again."

The ambitious chairman added that the club hopes to be able to get grants from Sport Wales to help them move forward with the plans, which also include bringing the Mountain Rangers clubhouse back into regular use.

Mr Jones, a former Nantlle Vale, Llanrug and Pwllheli player himself, is confident that he can help bring back to life a club which, although he never played for, he has a strong personal connection to.

"Mountain Rangers is a historical old football club that has sentimental ties to our family," he said.

"My wife's grandfather played for them and so did her uncle. Hopefully in the future that can continue with other family members."

Mountain Rangers FC had a number of junior sides in the past and its senior side won the Alves Cup in 1980 and the Gwynedd League during the 1990s.

As part of fundraising, the club is holding a gig with musician Phil Gas on May 6, as well as a a friendly match between Rhostryfan and Rhosgadfan on June 1.
