AN APPEAL has gone out for more volunteers to help keep Anglesey special and beautiful.

Anglesey’s countryside and AONB team will be holding an open day at Holyhead’s Breakwater Country Park (LL65 1YG) to attract more volunteers on Tuesday, January 23. The event is in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy.

The island is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is renowned as one of the most distinctive, attractive and varied landscapes in the British Isles.

The AONB is mainly a coastal designation, covering most of Anglesey’s 201 kilometre (125 miles) coastline and a third of the island.

Anglesey AONB project officer, Wiliam Stockwell said: “Volunteering is a great way to get out and about, keep fit, meet new people and have some fun, as well as helping to care for our precious AONB landscape. The work completed by volunteers is always highly valued and, in most cases, would not be possible without their help.

“You don’t need any previous experience as staff are always on hand to show you the ropes, and our volunteers are always free to work at their own pace in a relaxed atmosphere. You can join in every of our work days or just join in every once in a while.”

The open day (10am-4pm) will introduce the type of volunteering opportunities on offer in the AONB, which can vary from litter picking and gorse clearance to controlling invasive species and habitat preservation.

To help organize suitable volunteering tasks, those attending are asked to contact one of the team beforehand.

Volunteers should also bring sturdy footwear, waterproof clothing and a packed lunch.
