FUNDING of over £1.7m is set to help improve attractions in the Holyhead area of Anglesey, the First Minister has announced.

Carwyn Jones said the money, which comes from EU funds will be used as part of a £2.8m investment programme for the area.

The aim of the project is to transform Holyhead into an iconic destination, making the most of its strategic location as a gateway for international visitors to Wales and the UK.

The project is set to improve the welcome centre at Holyhead port, the railway station, the iconic St Cybi Church and Roman fort site, and Holyhead Breakwater Park.

The developments are part of the Welsh Government’s wider EU funded Tourism Attractor Destination programme, led by Visit Wales..

Ahead of a visit his visit St Cybi’s Church and Roman Fort site on Thursday, the First Minister said: “Holyhead has a rich history stretching back to Roman and medieval times.

“This funding boost will improve and raise the profile of the wealth of natural attractions Holyhead has to offer and encourage thousands of visitors to spend more time in the area."

Anglesey County Council Leader, Cllr. Llinos Medi Huws added: "We very much welcome this announcement of investment to improve and enhance Holy Island's role as a key visitor gateway into Anglesey.

"This package will help us improve the visitor experience at key locations, helping to promote what the area has to offer and give visitors a flavour of Welsh culture and heritage."
