BEAUMARIS allotment keepers will be sharing the fruits of their labour at a special event in July.

Visitors to the National Garden Scheme Open Weekend, being held at Beaumaris Allotments, on Saturday, July 7 and Sunday, July 8 are in for a tasty treat.

Not only will there be tours of the allotments, but amongst the attractions will be plot holder Keevan Anker, showing his “mini vineyard,” and providing visitors with a taste of his recent vintage.

Other activities include a children's treasure hunt with what organisers says are "amazing prizes" and a chance to see some of the more unusual plants and vegetables being grown, including the Rainbow Sweet Inca sweetcorn or the Emperor of Russia dwarf French beans.

Allotments chairman Andrew Dixon is keen to stress that "allotments are for everyone" and promotes the "grow your own" message.

"We have all ages on the plots from young children, including the 1st Beaumaris Beavers, to more mature adults! One of the many benefits of "growing your own" is that, in addition to getting beneficial exercise and making friends, you can try some of the more unusual varieties of fruit and vegetables all picked fresh.

"For instance have you ever eaten a Turks Turban or a Trombolino? It's an autumn delight and delicious in any recipe where you would use butternut squash."

At the end of the year, the Beaumaris plot holders get together to celebrate their hard work at the BAAFTAS (Beaumaris Annual Awards For The Allotments).

They also sample their homemade jams, chutneys and pickles at their annual Allotfest. One of their awards is for growing giant pumpkins with all the proceeds of the Guess the Weight competition going to the local Beaumaris RNLI.

Experienced plot holders will be on hand with green-fingered advice throughout the weekend.

There are also home-made cakes and cream teas at the nearby Happy Valley Pavilion.
