A HEART-RENDING exhibition depicting the plight of people displaced from their homes is on at Bangor Cathedral.

The event is part of Christian Aid week and will focus on the 40 million people who have fled their homes due to violence, natural disasters or extreme poverty.

Anna Jane Evans, of Christian Aid, and chair of Bangor Cytûn group, said: "Whilst these people have fled their homes, they have not fled their own country. They are known as ‘internally displaced people.’ Unlike refugees and other migrants, they do not have the same protection under international rules."

The United Nations is set to prepare two new agreements on the rights of refugees and migrants.

"Unfortunately, the IDPs are not going to be included in these agreements. We think this should change," she added. The show will focus on people from Nigeria, Kenya and Iraq. Falmata Bulama fled with her children to a temporary camp by Maiduguri town, in the Borno region of Nigeria.

Dean Kathy Jones, of Bangor Cathedral, said: "I welcome the exhibition to the Cathedral during Christian Aid Week. I hope and pray that as people engage with it, they will learn something of the awful circumstances that so many in our world have to live in."

The exhibition runs from May 13-17. Christian Aid Week is May 13-20 May. Groups will be fund-raising. See the Christian Aid website: caid.org.uk/wales
