ORIEL Môn is taking part in a year long celebration to commemorate the life and work of the late Sir Kyffin Williams.

Sir Kyffin Williams is one of Wales’s greatest artists and lived on Anglesey. He would be celebrating his 100th birthday on Wednesday, May 9, 2018.

Oriel Môn will be presenting a major retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work in Oriel Kyffin Williams from Saturday, February 3 until Sunday, July 1.

He was a great champion of Oriel Môn, visiting the gallery on a weekly basis and donating over 400 of his own works, as well as works by other artists to the Isle of Anglesey Art Collection.

Ceri Williams, learning and engagement manager, at Oriel Môn said: “Kyffin Williams was a giant amongst the art world and his presence continues to be missed greatly here at the Oriel as well as throughout Wales. It is a privilege for us to have the opportunity to delve into his life as an artist, his love for his home in Anglesey, his humour and to catch a glimpse of his life away from the easel.”

This exhibition will take the viewer on a journey through Kyffin’s early years, his influences through to his training at the Slade School of Art, foreign travels and his much loved portraits, as well as showing his familiar land and sea scapes. Kyffin was well known for his unusual technique of working with a palette knife and thick consistency of paint.

Through this method, he dramatically brought to life the people and locations he returned to throughout his life in Snowdonia and his beloved Anglesey. This exhibition includes loans from many institutions and individuals, most notably the collection of the National Library of Wales.

Oriel Môn is open daily between 10am and 5pm and admission is free.
