Popular Llanfairpwll WI building to be renovated thanks to Horizon donation

Funding given to the WI by the nuclear power firm's Charitable Donations, Community Support and Sponsorship scheme, will allow them to complete renovation works to the Llanfairpwll WI Hall and Tollhouse.

The building is a much-loved local attraction and was also home to Britain’s very first Women’s Institute in 1915.

Renovation works to the Tollhouse, which has been transformed into a museum dedicated to the birthplace of the WI in Britain, will ensure the property is in pristine condition ahead of the influx in visitors over the summer months.

The Llanfairpwll Women’s Institute still operates from the original hall and welcomes new members regularly.

Audrey Jones, Treasurer of the Anglesey Federation of Women’s Institutes, is delighted with the news of Horizon's donation.

“We’re truly overwhelmed by Horizon’s generosity and delighted to be able to progress with the renovations," she said.

"These two buildings in Llanfairpwll are of great significance to local people and are an important part of the national heritage of the Women’s Institute.

"We have a huge responsibility to ensure that they’re kept in pristine condition and remain accessible for our members and visitors alike. We’re looking forward to getting started.”

Horizon's scheme has helped more than 150 organisations across North Wales since it was launched in 2014.

This latest contribution to the Anglesey WI has helped them reach an important milestone – investing more than £250,000 in good causes, projects and organisations near to the Wylfa Newydd site.

“We were delighted to be able to support this fantastic initiative and were particularly excited to see that it was this donation that helped us to reach the £250,000 milestone.”
