A PROTEST against conflict in Syria is being held in Bangor.

The "Don't Bomb Syria" rally will gather at the town clock on the High Street, between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, on Saturday, April 14.

Speakers include Arfon MP Hywel Williams, Anna Jane Evans (Cymdeithas y Cymod), Councillor Catrin Wager and Hywel Davies (Bangor & Ynys Mon Peace and Justice Group).

Speaking on its Facebook page the organisers of the event said: "While we do not condone the recent gas attacks, we do not feel that engaging in conflict, at further cost to innocent life, is the appropriate response.

"Join us to send a clear message that we do not want the UK government to engage in war."

Plaid Cymru MP Hywel Williams said: "I condemn the appalling al Assad regime in Syria and had pressed in vain for proper UK support for the Syrian democracy movement long before the war started.

"Now, before we go any further we need to be told why Britain must launch a military attack and what the government intends to do. Not the restricted detail of course. But a guarantee that civilians will not suffer death and injury.

"And, before we go in, we must have a proper plan for getting out again. These are some of the clear lessons from the disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Iā€™m proud that he people of Arfon are saying what they think so clearly and so quickly. By the time we meet, Mr Trump may have already fired the missiles. Or he may not ā€“ who knows with him? Britain should not follow on his coat tails until Parliament has had its say."
