A WOMAN who jumped 25 feet from a bridge yesterday (Sunday) suffered leg and back injuries.

Police were called at 11.30 am after receiving calls that a woman was standing on the parapet of the bridge over the A55 at Penrhosgarnedd.

Negotiators also attended the scene and police stopped the traffic on the A55 because she was standing directly over the carriageway.

Paramedics were also called to the scene and negotiators tried to talk the woman, aged 29, down from the bridge safely.

At 12.18pm the woman jumped and paramedics who were by her side in seconds found her still breathing and treated her before taking her to Ysbyty Gwynedd.

A police spokesman said: "The police and the ambulance service responded quickly to this incident and did everything we could to ensure the safety of the public and to try to allow the female to leave the bridge safely.

"Those in attendance were faced with a very difficult situation as the female was in a very agitated state from the offset.

"Despite everybody's efforts she chose to jump from the bridge onto the road below and has sustained injuries to her lower body.

"The situation would have been considerably worse had we not implemented the road closures and ensured that the ambulance service were on standby."

The A55 was reopened and police have made contact with the woman's family.
