YOUNGSTERS in Brynsiencyn will soon have a safe place to meet, when construction begins on a £7,000 youth shelter.
In response to complaints from teenagers in the village about a lack of things to do, the neighbourhood policing team set about tackling the problem.
PCSO Eira Hughes explained that the situation had also created concerns amongst residents; she said: "When we spoke to residents they highlighted that they felt there was no facilities for older youths in the village, and despite living in one of the safest places in the country, at times they said they felt intimidated by them congregating around the village.
"We spoke to the youths and it became ever clearer that they had no where to go to meet up so we set about doing something about it."
To this end, the neighbourhood team attained a £5,000 grant from the Safer Ynys Mon Community Safety Partnership, and a further £2,000 from the Police and Community Trust (PACT).
Many of the youths in the village are now involved in the project, and are helping to decide its design, location and colour. Community sergeant Guy Blackwell added: "It's essential the teenagers are involved in the whole process, we as a neighbourhood policing team, the youths and volunteers from the community are preparing the groundwork and with the help of the local contractors will install the shelter and bench.
"This is what neighbourhood policing is all about, interacting with the community, finding out what matters to them and working in partnership to ensure that we can do all we can to make the area better for all."
The youth shelter is latest scheme that the area's neighbourhood policing teams has been involved in, and other recent successes in the community include the closing of two crack houses.
In addition, police boxes have been put up in the local schools to encourage children, pupils parents and everyone to get their views and information about anything that causes concern.
