A FORMER RAF serviceman from Bangor has been awarded a prestigious medal by the Malaysian government.
Maurice Elwyn Jones, 72, was presented with the Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) at a ceremony in Heswall British Legion, for his tour of duty in the country from 1957-60.

His service was during the period designated by the British colonial government as the Malayan Emergency, and Mr Jones was charged with driving an airbase ambulance.

Mr Jones, who also spent time in Libya and Singapore, said: "It's an honour to receive this medal from the Malaysian government.

"I enjoyed the day very much and it was a pleasure to meet the colonel - I spoke to him in Malay, and even though I hadn't used the language since 1960, I remembered it like yesterday."

The PJM is a commemorative medal which the Government of Malaysia has awarded to eligible British citizens, for their service in Malaya or Malaysia between August 31, 1957 and August 12, 1966.
