COMPETITION is hotting up on Anglesey as two development firms seek the right to build a retail park.

At the beginning of January the Chronicle reported the unveiling of a £100m mixed development retail park earmarked for Llanfairpwll, from Ynys Môn Estates.

Since then another development company, St Malo, have announced their own plans for a prestige office park sited on Dafarn Newydd in Llangefni.

Glyn Pritchard-Jones of St Malo developers said: "The council have got their priorities all wrong – they should be looking at the regeneration of Llangefni.

"Our retail site would reinforce existing jobs and put Llangefni back on the map - and in my view, you can't justify, in retail leisure terms, a scheme at Llanfair PG as the retail is not needed there."

The Llangefni scheme may lead to the creation of up to 3,500 jobs. Ynys Môn Estates say their project will generate between 1,300 - 1,800 long term jobs.

With the Llanfairpwll plan already well into the public consultation stage, St Malo's blueprints are expected to go up for public consultation six weeks before the local council elections in May.

Anglesey Council leader, Cllr Gareth Winston Roberts, said: "As the portfolio holder for the economy, I look at all applications and consider what is best for Ynys Môn. I am looking for long-term sustainability for Ynys Môn as I believe that the people of Anglesey have a right to that just the same as everybody else."

anglesey man,

Sir-Fon 28/02/2008 10:59:12
I hope the council let at least one park go ahead, and hopefully without controvasy and cloak and dagger tactics that end up showing Anglesey Council to be corrupt, that have been shown on TV so many times.
Anglesey needs jobs. Transparency and honesty would be nice to see at last from our Council.
Too little too late?, Wylfa's closure has been on the cards for years, opening a Wylfa B wont solve the economic crisis if it goes ahead either, next generation power stations employ 50% less staff!!
Anything that brings jobs to the Island should be given the green light.
