A CANINE crackdown has been launched to target dog owners who allow their pets to defecate on graves in Menai Bridge.
Responding to complaints from the public, Island dog warden David Peacock discovered a number of headstones and plots in St Tysilio's church were covered in muck.
Mr Peacock, an employee of Anglesey Council, described the scene as "absolutely disgusting".
He said: "I've seen some sights in my short time as a dog warden, but this is a new low.
"The dog owners responsible, and I'm sure they know who they are, should take a long hard look at themselves - letting their animals foul in a public place, especially a cemetery, shows a total lack of respect and disregard for others."
In the vicinity of the church is the Belgian Prom area, which is regularly used by dog owners and their pets, and Mr Peacock revealed that the police and county council will be teaming up to catch dog owners who do not clean up after their pet fouls in a public place.
He added: "We are determined to crackdown on dog fouling, which is an environmental crime and a major problem in many of our communities.
"If dog owners are caught in the act they will be given a £75 fixed penalty notice, and failure to pay within the specified time will mean a court appearance as well as a possible criminal conviction and additional fine."
Menai Bridge community beat manager, WPC Alison Hughes, said: "It is, of course, very distressing for many to see that these anti-social dog owners allow their animals to foul on headstones in the cemetery - the area is a beautiful place used by many and it is being spoilt by the thoughtlessness of a few.
"The issue of dog fouling is an increasing problem and we will be helping the dog warden to proactively target this area."
