A SNOWDONIA youth hostel has been earmarked to benefit from nearly £1m of investment - but the Bangor hostel will close later this year.

The news was announced on Tuesday by the Youth Hostel Association (YHA) as part of a £13.5m revamp across the UK.

YHA chief executive Roger Clarke said: "We've already started refurbishment projects and major training programmes and are ready to push ahead with the next batch of investments in places where people really want to stay."

YHA's Pen-y-Pass in Snowdonia is one of the refurbishment projects identified by a major survey of the 161 properties operated directly by
YHA out of its network of 208 youth hostels.
The 79 bed hostel is split into two parts, a main building and an annex, both of which will be refurbished.

In addition, cash will be invested in renewing general fixtures and fittings and improving heating.

Meanwhile, the 70 bed Tan-Y-Bryn site in Bangor will close at the end of the year, as YHA chiefs deemed the estimated £400,000 required for a revamp to be unrecoupable.

Mr Clarke added: "It is always regrettable when we announce closures and every effort will be made to support and relocate those staff affected at these sites.

"The closure of sites is unavoidable for YHA, while the creation of good quality facilities in excellent locations is a necessity for our survival and growth."
