A LAST minute pay deal at a meat factory on Anglesey has settled a dispute and averted strike action.

Hundreds of workers in the Unite union were set to walk out today (Friday)from Welsh Country Foods Ltd in Gaerwen.

A two per cent pay offer had been rejected unanimously by the 280 workers at the abattoir that employs a total of 500 staff.

Th
e factory was owned by the Grampian Food Group but was recently taken over by the Dutch phone company Vion.

Paddy McNaught told the factory bosses yesterday that union members had planned a second 24-hour stoppage next Friday.

The management backed down and offered a three per cent pay rise and the union accepted.

Unite's regional organiser Paddy McNaught had said the original offer had amounted to a "pay cut" in view of the current economy:

"They made a revised offer when we told them we were going to take a second day of action," said Mr McNaught.

"The three per cent will be back-dated to April with a review for the new company Vion so the dispute is over.

"I'm glad it's over without us having to take action and I'm glad we got the company to see sense, but I'm a bit disappointed they let it get that far," he said.

Since the start of the dispute the number of Unite union members at the factory have swelled to 320.

Mr McNaught said that the union would look after their members needs as far as working conditions and legal matters were concerned such as industrial injuries and disputes.

A spokesman for Vion said they had reached a resolution over the pay award.

"We will now be entering into meaningful discussions regarding a piece-work rate," he said.
