A FRENCH power company has bought land next to Anglesey's Wylfa nuclear power station.

The company EDF had previously said it would be considering investment in a new generation of nuclear plants in the UK, and has been reviewing its options on the Island since last year, as well as at Hinkley Point in Somerset, where it has also purchased land.

Plans for a Wylfa B have been in the offing for some time, with Anglesey County Council putting their support firmly behind the idea since 2006.

And with Wylfa set to close in 2010, any interest from parties such as EDF in developing a new nuclear power station is likely to be welcomed.

A spokesperson for the company said: "EDF has indicated publicly for over three years that it would be interested in investing in a new generation of nuclear plants for the UK.

"On possible sites for new plants, the Government has indicated that the most viable sites are likely to be adjacent to existing nuclear power plants.

"EDF has been exploring possibilities at Hinkley Point and at Wylfa for more than a year and as a result, EDF has purchased land next to the existing sites at both locations."

It is expected that Westminster will select a number of sites in 2010 for construction of new nuclear power stations, the first of which is set to be functional by 2018.

Anglesey's head of economic development, Sasha Davies, said: "We are aware of the situation as previously reported in the press. We continue to discuss with a number of companies the great potential of Wylfa B."
