AN Amlwch butcher scooped eight awards designed to reward innovative flair and showcase the best in independent butchers.

Owen Roberts a'i Fab competed in the Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales butchers competition at Venue Cymru, Llandudno, on April 9.

The annual awards for Innovation and Excellence in Meat Products, gives butchers the chance to demonstrate and promote the range of high quality products that they produce, while at the same time demonstrating innovation and originality.

Mr Roberts won six gold awards for his pork with peppers, chilli and chilli jam sausages, dry cure bacon, home made pork pie, home made ploughman's pork pie with cheese and pickle, home cured bacon, and traditional pork sausage, plus two silver awards for speciality pork and lamb burgers.

The products were marked by a team of respected industry figures and consumer representatives on their ease of cutting, texture and structure, internal appearance, colour, taste and smell.

Owen Roberts a'i Fab is a family-owned business started in 1903 by Mr Roberts' great grandfather and has survived despite the rise of supermarkets and changes in people's shopping habits.
