A RE-DEVELOPMENT scheme set to create hundreds of new jobs in Bangor has been given the go ahead by Gwynedd Council.

The plans, submitted by Cheshire-based company Morbaine Ltd, will see the demolition of Bangor City Football Club's Farrar Road ground, and in its place will be built retail units, a bowling alley and both student and residential accomodation.

Meanwhile, the Citizens will be relocated to a new stadium at Nantporth on the banks of the Menai Straits, which should be ready for them within the next 12 months.

Bangor city councillor Huw Williams welcomed the news; he said: ""I think this decision is long overdue, but worth the wait as it can only help the city, especially the top end of the High Street.

"The football ground at Farrar Road is in a bad way now, so the sooner the football club can move, the better."

More reaction to follow.
