Tributes have been paid to a young man from Bingley who died in a car crash after two of his friends were arrested on suspicion of causing his death by dangerous driving.

Alastair Hellewell, 26, known as “Ally” was a passenger in the back of a white Volkswagen Polo car, being driven by his 21-year-old friend, which struck the kerb and overturned as it was being driven in Harden Road, Bingley.

Mr Hellewell, of Harden Lane, Wilsden, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 21-year-old driver of the car and a 25-year-old front seat passenger, who are both from the Bingley area, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, a police spokesman confirmed yesterday.

His friends took to social networking sites following the fatal crash to pay tribute to him.

One, Keith Ingham, of Keighley, posted on Twitter: “Why does God always take the good 1s so young RIP my friend Ally Gone far too soon.”

Steven Stanworth, of Bradford wrote on Facebook: “R.I.P Ally you will be missed” and said there would be “a gap in people’s lives”.

Floral tributes had been left at the scene of the crash yesterday.

One of the notes left read: “Alastair Ewan my most beloved grandson gone far too soon your heartbroken Nana. All my love hugs and kisses go with you forever.”

Traffic police were continuing their investigations into the crash, which happened at 11.45pm on Friday as the car was being driven towards Wilsden.

The driver and front seat passenger were taken to Airedale Hospital for treatment. They were released on bail last night, police said. Mr Hellewell’s family did not wish to comment when contacted by the Telegraph & Argus last night, because of the on-going police investigation.

Bradford Councillor Mike Ellis, whose Bingley Rural constituency includes Wilsden, called for a joint investigation between police and Bradford Council to find out whether anything could have been done to prevent the tragedy.

He said: “Obviously, all our thoughts are with the family at this sad time and I will be asking Council officers to investigate the cause of this tragic accident with the police.”

He said: “We are in the process of putting 20mph speed restrictions in the centre of Wilsden. We would not expect the highway to be to blame but, nevertheless, as a Council it is our responsibility to investigate whether it was a factor.”

The police spokesman said: “Officers are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who saw the vehicle heading out of Bingley prior to the incident.”

Any witnesses or anyone with information should contact the Major Collision and Enquiry Team on 101.
