PLANS for a landmark walking and cycling bridge for Rhyl have moved a step closer.
The cycle bridge over the Foryd Harbour is being developed by Denbighshire County Council and Sustrans, a UK charity promoting everyday journeys by foot, bike and public transport.
It forms part of its ambitious Connect2 project aiming to develop new walking and cycling routes across the UK which attracted £50million from the Big Lottery Fund in 2007.
Plans for the bridge have now been submitted to the county council.
The bridge, costing £4.2 million, will link Denbighshire with Conwy and form part of the Wales Coastal Path - an 800-mile continuous path for walkers hoped to be completed by 2012.
In September 2009, public consultation took place followed by a competition to design the new Foryd Harbour bridge.
Five designs were submitted with Chester-based Giffords chosen by the Design Commission for Wales.
Cllr David Thomas, Lead Member for Regeneration and Tourism, said the bridge would create quite a spectacle when opening and closing and attract tourists and inspire local people.
"This bridge will be a truly iconic feature for the town of Rhyl and it is part of a nationwide project that will give people the freedom to choose to travel sustainably.”
Area Manager for Sustrans, Glyn Evans, said the new bridge would make it so much easier and safer for people to make more of their everyday journeys without having to get in their car.
