GRIEVING family and friends of a teenager killed in a car crash have taken their campaign for a review of punishments for driving offences to the college he used to attend.
Danny Evans, 18, of Connah’s Quay, died when the car he was a passenger in overturned on Sealand Road in February.
His mum Debbie Evans started a petition campaigning for regulation on punishment for driving offences after Jack Hughes, from Connah’s Quay, also 18 at the time of the incident, was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and was banned from driving for twelve months.
Last week she took the petition to Deeside College, where high jump champion Danny had been a student, and collected 573 signatures.
“Danny’s friends asked me to start the petition after the court case,” said Debbie.
“Somebody at the college last week told me they had been given 100 hours community service for making prank mobile phone texts. How can they have the same sentence?”
So far more than 2,000 signatures have been collected on the petition, which also has the support of Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami.
Debbie plans to take the petition to London herself when it is finished.
Debbie and Mark have also held fundraising events to raise money for Deeside Athletics Club, where Danny was a member.
