ANGLESEY Aluminium will not restart production at its Holyhead plant which was mothballed a year ago.

The company announced today that the smelting works will be decommissioned by next year.

The plant, which employs 90 people, will continue its re-smelt operations.

The company shed 400 jobs last year when smelting ended last year.

An Anglesey Aluminium spokesperson said that the company had been in discussions with Anglesey Council and the Welsh Assembly to use the site.

“It is hoped that over time there will be at least as many job opportunities created as there was when Anglesey Aluminium was fully operational,” she said.

Ynys Môn MP Albert Owen said that news was not a surprise.

“If the company was serious about continuing to smelter at the plant it would have taken up the generous government offer in 2009 to help bridge the gap over a difficult economic period globally,” he said.

Mr Owen said there is a lot of interest in making Anglesey a centre of excellence in low carbon industries.

He added: “The Anglesey Aluminium site has a good infrastructure and is in an excellent location and frankly the company needs to leave as strong a legacy as possible and future jobs are the best way of doing this.”

The spokesperson added that the use of the Anglesey Aluminium jetty at Holyhead Harbour to berth cruise ships had benefitted the town’s economy.

Aluminium production ended last year after the company was unable to find a commercially viable power contract.

Anglesey AM Ieuan Wyn Jones said that the closure was sad, but not unexpected.

He added: "I know that every effort was made by workers, their unions and the Welsh Assembly Government to secure the future of the plant and it is deeply disappointing that smelting activities will now be de-commissioned.

“It is important that all parties continue to work together to try to attract and support new investment to the island in order to create new opportunities for the people of Anglesey.”
