A CAMPAIGNING schoolboy has won his fight to improve road safety at a traffic blackspot.

Harri Kirman, nine, from Upper Colwyn Bay, was in a car when it nearly collided with another vehicle at the junction between King’s Road and Oak Drive in Colwyn Bay.

Worried about the safety of others on the road, the determined youngster wrote to his Clwyd West assembly member, Darren Millar to ask for help.

This week it was announced that after months of campaigning Conwy County Borough Council has installed a mirror to combat the problem.

Val Kirman, Harri’s mother, said her son had received letters informing him of the progress of the road safety campaign. She said: “He was frightened when the car nearly crashed. It didn’t surprise me when he said that he wanted to write to Darren. He is very proud of himself now that something has been done and he liked getting the letters.”

Harri, who visited the site with his sister, 11-year-old Hâf, said: “I was really worried about how dangerous this crossing was so I decided to write to Darren to see if he could help. I’m really pleased we have managed to get the mirror installed and I now feel safer when crossing the road with my Mum.”

Mrs Kirman, 43, said her son followed in the footsteps of his sister Hâf, who has previously put pen to paper to urge officials to get something done. She said: “When we visited my father in hospital she was horrified at how a man in the next bed was treated, she got home and said I am going to write a letter. She has even written to Buckingham palace as she wanted to know what the Queen does and Gordon Brown to know what his day is like. She was really happy to get replies back.”

Mr Millar praised Harri, a pupil at Ysgol Pen y Bryn, for his determination and said he is “delighted” at the new safety measures. He said: “I was impressed by Harri taking such responsible and proactive approach to make his local roads safer. It’s encouraging to see someone so young taking an interest in politics and taking action to campaign for change.

“These improvements will hopefully make this junction safer and it’s good to see that the Council have listened to our concerns,” he added.
