VANDALS responsible for a spate of attacks on road safety signs on Anglesey have put lives at risk, say officials.
Three electronic safety signs warning motorists to slow down as they enter towns and villages have been damaged in the last two weeks.
Anglesey Council Highways and Transportation portfolio holder, Councillor Hefin Thomas: “These three communities have been robbed of a vital piece of road safety equipment for some time.
“This just isn’t acceptable when lives are at stake.”
Cabling was ripped from the back of a sign in Menai Bridge while signs in Valley and Rhosybol were turned the wrong way.
This damaged wiring and made them inoperable.
Anglesey’s safer roads officer Terfel Jones said that the signs were installed after residents raised concerns about speeding motorists.
Mr Jones added that the signs had to be repaired by a specialist contractor at great expense to the council.
“However, in view of the current financial difficulties, the Authority won’t be able to repair or replace any more damaged signs which means that they will have to be removed and this could ultimately put lives at risk,” he said.
It is not known whether the incidents separate attacks or the work of one person.
Mr Thomas added: “I’d appeal to members of the public to contact the Police or Local Authority immediately should they see any sign being tampered with or to report a damaged sign.”
