A LAND train tourist attraction would not fit in with Conwy’s medieval atmosphere, according to town officials.
As The Pioneer goes to press Conwy County Borough councillors will decide if a new tourist attraction will come to Conwy. If approval is given a land train will run through the town and along Conwy Quay.
The applicant has proposed one pick-up and drop-off point along the quay. Conwy’s principal harbour and maritime officer and the harbour advisory committee for Conwy will be involved in the decision making process.
In a council report concerns were raised regarding narrow and steep sections on the route and problems with the train reversing. Access onto busy highways was considered to be a concern. Conwy’s Chamber of Trade identified similar problems and said the attraction would not fit in with the historic town’s medieval atmosphere.
The council report recommended councillors to not support the stopping point and route of the train along the quay, as it would have a negative impact on quayside traffic.
Vicky McDonald, mayor of Conwy, also feared a land train would create traffic problems. She said: “I think it has already been suggested that the train travels down Berry Street, but there would be problems with congestion. Conwy is such a beautiful town a tour on foot would be better. Conwy is such a beautiful town, you can walk on the walls. I also don’t think it would benefit the businesses as I don’t think it would stop in the centre of Conwy.”
Some members of the council’s cabinet are in favour of the train, saying a number of dropoff and pick-up points would aid those with mobility problems, accessing areas of Conwy which had been previously hard to reach.
Others have said that the train would travel through Bodlondeb, an area which needs further promotion as it is often missed by tourists.
