AN ANGLESEY man told of his surprise and delight after his £1.1 million lottery win.
Wayne Hughes, 34, of Holyhead said today that his big win on the Lotto draw had not sunk in yet.
“I’ve always dreamt I would win but I still think it’s a dream,” he said. “I’ve not experienced anything like that before so I can’t really explain it.”
Wayne discovered that he had won the August 7 when his mother, who checks his lottery numbers every Wednesday and Saturday, called him late on Monday night.
The former Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley porter rushed to the mother’s house and double checked the numbers on Teletext.
“I didn’t believe it at first, but as it was so late, I hid the ticket in an old CD box until the morning when I was going to call Camelot.
" I still can’t believe I am a winner – it seems completely unreal!”
Wayne had a tattoo of his lucky numbers - 13, 16, 22, 25, 31, 39 and 7 - on his left arm this week to mark his win.
“The tattoo is a rememberance of something that is going to change my life,” he said.
Speaking at the Camelot cheque presentation at Bangor Business School, Wayne said that he hoped to go to university to study for a career in IT.
“Having this money means I can go and study without any worries about where the cash will come from,” he said.
He added that he planned to continue as a section leader at Wilkinsons in Holyhead.
Wayne said that being a millionaire would not change him.
“I’m going to be careful,” he said. “I've never been flash with cash because I’ve never had it.”
Wayne, the youngest of three brothers and two sisters, said that he planned to treat family and friends.
He also want to move from his rented flat, but had not decided where he would like to live.
“There’s no reason why I would want to leave Anglesey but the sky’s the limit,” he said.
Wayne added that he planned to spend some of his winning on a holiday.
“I would like to have a Christmas in New York,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to go because it just looks so good in the movies.”
The Liverpool FC fan also plans to buy a season ticket to Anfield.
He added that he wanted to trade in his R registration Fiesta for a Lexus or Mondeo.
His first purchase, however, will be a little more modest.
“I need a new pair of trainers so I think I’ll go down to the shop today,” he said.
Wayne added that he had already bought tickets for the lottery draws on Wednesday and Saturday.
