PLANS to revamp an Anglesey cinema into a multi-purpose leisure complex have been unveiled by developers.

The new owners of the Empire Cinema in Holyhead plan to convert the building into a bowling alley, 3D cinema and cafe bar.

Co-owner Michael Hamzae hoped that the plans would revive the town's ailing economy.

"We all know that Holyhead is dying and every day we more shops closing," he said. "We want these shops to be open."

The building was bought eight months ago by the owners of the Moonlight takeaway on Williams Street.

The project, estimated to cost £1.5million, include turning the ground floor into a bowling alley. A new floor would be added upstairs to house a cafe.

The cinema would also be upgraded to a 3-D system. A youth hostel is also planned.

Holyhead Chamber of Trade chairman Ian Ashworth said that the proposed development would give a huge boost to the town.

"We fully support anything that it going to bring people into town like the cinema, which would save people having to travel to Llandudno,” he said.

Mr Ashworth added that the cinema is often used by passengers waiting for delayed ferries and that the new facilities would be somewhere for them to go.

Mayor of Holyhead Councillor JV Owen added: “From what I have seen it will be a state of the art cinema and bowling alley and it will bring much needed tourism to the town.”

Plans have yet to be submitted to Gwynedd Council.
