A Snowdonia mountain rescue team has attended a record number of incidents this year.

Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team Chris Lloyd attended 82 rescues this year - 12 ahead of the total for the same time last year.

“We’re very busy at the moment,” he said. “We have been out every day over the last ten days.”

The latest incident happened yesterday when a man was airlifted to hospital after a 100ft fall on a Snowdonia mountain.

The man, believed to be in his late 30s, suffered a broken arm and leg and while scrambling on the east ridge of Y Garn on Tuesday.

Chris said that accident was down to bad luck.

“His arm or foot must have slipped on a loose rock,” he said. “He was tied on a rope which stopped him from going further.”

He added: “It probably would have been fatal otherwise.

An RAF Valley 22 Squadron helicopter airlifted the man, of Hampshire, to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.

His two female companions were taken to Oggie Base. They were shaken but otherwise unhurt.

Another man was airlifted to hospital after breaking his ankle on a mountain in Snowdonia.

Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue spokesman Chris Lloyd said that the man, in his 40s, slipped on damp rocks at Bochllwyd after climbing Tryfan on Monday.

“He strapped the injured ankle up with a splint and carried on for a short distance, but the pain was too great,” he said.

The man, from Worcestershire, called Ogwen Valley Mountain rescue at around 8.30pm.

Mr Lloyd said that the man, who was with another climber, was experienced and well equipped.
