YACHTSMEN from across the region and beyond to the Menai Straits for the 180th anniversary of the Beaumaris Regatta.

Menai Strait 1 Yacht Club president Raymond Beer said that yesterday’s event was a great success.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves, most people had two hours of sailing and there were one of two unusual winners,”  he said.

Steven Watson Jones, of Beaumaris, won the Wickerstaff Challenge Cup race around Puffin Island.

It was his first win in four years of sailing in his Menai Straits 1 Design boat, Deryn (Bird).

John Lainge won the 1 Star class race in his boat, Juno.

The regatta, which started in 1830, is part of the Menai Straits Regatta Fortnight, which ends tomorrow.

Around 80 competitors from Anglesey, Gwynedd and across the North West of England hold race days at over the two weeks.

Conwy and Hoylake Sailing Clubs were due to hold races today.

Mr Beer said that the event benefitted the island’s economy.

“It’s enormously important,” he said. “Beaumaris doubles in size and the tourism it brings here is huge.”
