THE largest cruise ship to dock at Anglesey could provide a boost the region’s economy.

Anglesey Tourism Partnership spokesperson Pip Cockeram said that luxury liner the Westerdam will bring up to 2,000 passengers to Holyhead Port on Saturday.

She added: “The arrival of the Dutch America Line flagship will give a huge economic boost to Anglesey's ambitions to attract an even bigger slice of the lucrative European leisure cruise market.”

The will 950 feet long, 82,500 tonne vessel will dock at 8am the recently refurbished jetty owned and operated by Anglesey Aluminium.

A partnership between Anglesey Aluminium, Stena Line and the Welsh Assembly Government has enabled the provision of new facilities at the jetty which include a gift shop, information centre, disabled toilets, an Internet centre and a dedicated stage and entertainment area.

Pip added that the visit would include welcoming celebrations and visits to attractions in the area Caernarfon Castle, South Stack Lighthouse and Bodnant Gardens.

“Local coach companies will line up along the jetty and shuttle buses will also take visitors into Holyhead where they will be entertained by a number of local displays of traditional Welsh dancing, street performers and an appearance by Royal harpist Clare Jones,” she said.

Anthony Rylands, who owns the Anchorage Hotel in Holyhead, welcomed the liner’s arrival in Holyhead.

“It can only be a benefit, if you can get them off the ships and into the community,” he said. “The more things we can attract to Holyhead, the better.”

Anglesey Aluminium Works director Brian King is expected to present a Welsh slate clock to the Westerdam's Captain during the civic welcome.

Anglesey Council cruise co-ordiator Julia McCormack added: “I am really excited about the visit and am looking forward to working with the team to give the passengers and crew a really warm Welsh welcome.”
