A STREET in an Anglesey town has undergone a £600,000 revamp as part of a scheme to regenerate the island’s towns.

Anglesey’s Economic portfolio holder, Councillor Bob Parry OBE welcomed the renovation of Marine Square in Holyhead as part of the £8.7 million Three Towns project.

“Effective communication and a strong working relationship with the community in Holyhead has allowed us to successfully transform Marine Square into a key link between town centre and the ever popular Newry Beach,” he said.

Improvements to the square include new paving, a seating area, a new road layout and external upgrade to buildings around the square.

Wave themed railings have been erected to enclose the children’s play area near and allotments near Newry Beach to tie in with the design of the nearby car park.

Information ‘gateway beacons’, to promote the area, are also in place to guide visitors to various attractions along Newry Beach.

The Three Towns scheme , operated by Gwynedd Council, designed to regenerate Holyhead, Llangefni and Amlwch.

The council secured funding from the Welsh Assembly and the EU to finance the scheme.

The revamp of Marine Square, which is home to a number of local guesthouses and other businesses, will be celebrated during the Holyhead Festival this weekend.

Councillor Robert Llywelyn Jones hoped that the revamp would make the square more attractive while providing parking spaces for businesses.

“Close co-operation between various agencies and consultation with local people has come up trumps,” he said. “I now hope to see local businesses starting to benefit from these welcome improvements.”

A celebration of the renovations will be held during the Holyhead Festival from 11am-4pm on Saturday, July 24.

A street performer will perform magic tricks and balloon modelling on the day.
Marine Square residents living will receive a £5 voucher to spend at one of the businesses on the square if they complete a short questionnaire, as part of the ongoing council consultation.
