A CAERNARFON businessman hope to boost the town’s economy with a £750,000 state of the art fitness club.
Gwilym Bee of developers G&C Bee Construction Ltd said that the 1000 sq ft club at Doc Fictoria that would create around 35 jobs and business opportunities for sports instructors.
“We’re hoping to create something that’s unique to Caernarfon, and that will prevent local gym trade from being lost to Bangor,” he said.
The club would cover three levels of Block C, part of which is occupied by Travelodge.
The gym will include a weightroom, saunas and steam rooms, beauty treatments and two studios for dance, martial arts and fitness classes.
There will also be a self service cafe for members.
Mr Bee said that around 25 full time and 10 part time positions would be created for people living in Caernarfon and the surrounding area.
He added.contractors from the area would be given priority during construction.
The club is expected to open by January 2011, subject to planning consent.
A spokesman for site owners Carlton said that there had been a lack of leisure facilities at Doc Fictoria since it opened in 2007.
“The proposed gym will provide additional facilities for local residents as well as visitors. This in turn will reap wider economic benefits and boost tourism in the town as a whole.
“It is very encouraging to see a local business looking to invest and expand, especially given the economic climate, and we’re very happy to support their plans.
There is already planning permission for a gym on the first and second floors and some retail space will remain on the ground floor.
Gwynedd Council’s planning committee will consider a change of use application for the ground floor on Wednesday, July 28.
