QUESTION marks may hang over the future of Amlwch swimming pool but there was good news for the town as it was announced that construction on a new £40,000 all-weather pitch will soon begin.

The proposal was given the green light during a meeting of Anglesey Council’s executive, and will see the surface built on one of the two Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones multi-use games areas that are let by Amlwch leisure centre outside school hours.
It is hoped that the development will enhance school sports facilities as well as encouraging five-a-side lettings whilst releasing the sports hall for other lettings and increasing the leisure centre income.

Porth Amlwch councillor Dylan Jones said: “I’m absolutely delighted - in my opinion this is absolutely wonderful for the centre.

“The pool is a separate issue but I would stress that the new council executive group wants to move things forward and by November we will hopefully be a strong position to know where we stand.”

He added: “One thing I stand strongly against is the closure of the pool.

“I personally believe that there will be strenuous cuts over the next few years but I pray they will not touch the swimming pool.”
