A THRIVING Colwyn Bay theatre has been found to be even more of a cultural treasure.
Theatr Colwyn already holds the title of the UK’s oldest working cinema, but research suggests that it may also be the oldest working theatre in Wales.
The venue on Abergele Road is close to securing a £750,000 government grant to overhaul the building and keep the theatre operating in the future.
However, supporters and the Friends of Theatr Colwyn group are working hard to raise money to cover a shortfall of £100,000.
Following revelations from volunteer historian, Roy Schofield, the management of the Victorian building now believe that the theatre has a history which stretches back 121 years.
The first professional theatrical performance, a military drama called “Held by the Enemy”, took place in July 1889, when the venue was known as The Public Hall.
Phil Batty, manager of Theatr Colwyn, said: “As far as we are aware, there are no other theatres in Wales which have lasted as long as us, sadly so many of them have closed down.”
At the end of the 19th Century and at the start of the 20th Century, the Public Hall became a regular fixture for famous touring companies, such as the Barling Brothers.
The fundraising campaign aims to contribute to the cost of redeveloping the front of house at Theatr Colwyn, bringing the facilities into the 21st Century whilst maintaining its Victorian charm and quirkiness.
Sarah Ecob, general manager, said: “We are determined to bring the facilities up to date to ensure that theatrical presentations can continue for many years to come, continuing the traditional of high quality theatre in Colwyn Bay for local people and visitors.”
Fundraising activities are due to take place to raise the money by the end of the financial year.
Barbara Hawley, chairperson of the Friends group, said: “We’ve had some donations, but it’s a long way for us to march to get to £100,000.”
“We’re looking for a few people out there who have a bob or two they can donate to us.”
A coffee morning with raffle, book stall and entertainment will take place at Parkway, Rhos on Sea, between 10am and 12pm on July 8. A variety concert is also being held on July 9 at 7.30pm at Theatr Colwyn.
