COUNCIL leaders have announced new policy guidelines on how to deal with petitions will come into force this week.

From tomorrow, a petition containing 1,500 names will result in a full debate involving Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) councillors. Petitions with more than 750 names will be reviewed by an overview and scrutiny committee.

Petitions must be sent to Democratic Services at Floor 5, HQ, Nicholas Street, Chester, CHI 2NP.

CWaC council leader Cllr Mike Jones said: “I am sure that this new way of handling petitions will be welcomed by residents. It also meets the council’s open and transparent approach in dealing with all council business as well as bringing us closer to the people we represent and serve.”

Any petitions with less than 750 names can be presented to the council in the normal way. Petitions can be signed or organised by anyone who lives, works or studies in West Cheshire, including residents under 18.
