PEOPLE across Wrexham are being urged to sign up and volunteer for the British Red Cross.

The mission of the British Red Cross is to help people in crisis, whoever or wherever they may be.

As part of Volunteers’ Week, which runs until June 7, those working for the organisation in Wrexham are urging others to come forward and help.

Examples of work the Red Cross undertakes in and around the local area includes the Home From Hospital scheme, which provides short term care and support in the home when a patient has been discharged from hospital, as well as medical equipment loans.

Jeanette Fenna from Moss, one of the Red Cross’s current volunteers in Wrexham, said she had decided to join after taking retirement.

She said: “I felt that I could still make a contribution and help people. I really enjoy it. All the volunteers get on very well, we are great friends, and it is nice to know we are helping others in the work we do.

“For example, in Home From Hospital you can see people’s confidence returning to them as they gradually get used to being back in ordinary life again.”

The Big Red Cross Bus is coming to Wrexham this weekend as part of Volunteers’ Week. The double decker is touring the UK complete with a mobile charity shop and advice centre on board to help match people up to their ideal volunteering opportunities.

The lower deck of the bus is a fully functioning charity shop where people can browse, buy, or even have a go at volunteering in the shop.

Red Cross retail volunteer David Stevens, from Bangor, will be demonstrating his steaming, sorting, pricing and till operating skills and talking about why he finds volunteering so satisfying.

David is also a logistics expert with the British Red Cross Emergency Response Unit (ERU), and flew out to Haiti to join the relief effort after the earthquake.

The organisation is also appealing for stock so anyone with donations should bring them to the bus on Saturday.

The Big Red Cross Bus will be at Queen’s Square on Saturday from 10am-4pm.
