GLYN Davies MP has hailed the new Conservative-Liberal Democrat Government as a brave step which will benefit Montgomeryshire’s future generations.
Following days of negotiations Conservative leader David Cameron and his Liberal Democrat counterpart Nick Clegg have thrashed out a deal for the parties to share power.
Mr Cameron is now Prime Minister with Mr Clegg as his deputy, and Cameron said the agreement could mark a ‘historic and seismic shift’ in British politics.
Mr Davies said that although the coalition may seem unusual to Montgomeryshire voters, it is vital for the future of the country.
He said: “I think politically it’s unusual because the two parties who are vying for power in Montgomeryshire are the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives and it must be strange to see them combine to form a coalition to run the country but we have no choice but to form a stable government to deal with the budget deficit the nation has been left with. A coalition between them was the only way to achieve that and the only way to achieve the stable government we need.”
Mr Davies also praised the parties for putting the country’s future ahead of their own.
He said: “They have both put the national interest before their party interests and made a commitment to compromise and give government the stability it needs.
“It is good news. Clearly Montgomeryshire like every other part of Britain is going to have some pressure on public spending but to my mind an unstable economy, not managed properly, people will suffer in Montgomeryshire and the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives have taken a pretty brave step to make certain in the long term that our children and grand children have got good public services.”
