INTERVIEW: Sam Fox coming to Rhyl

Published date: 31 March 2010 | Published by: David Waddington

HAVING caught the attention of a generation of Page Three fans and dominated the pop-charts with catchy hits like Touch Me (I Want Your Body), few celebrities epitomize an entire decade like Samantha Fox.

One of the country's most famous glamour models, London born Sam took advantage of her modelling career to move into her first love of music; releasing tracks like Naughty Girls (Need Love Too) and Hold On Tight which cemented her standing as a captivating singer on both sides of the Atlantic.

Now she is returning to the stage to take audiences on a trip down a musical memory lane including a stop at Rhyl's Pavilion Theatre in May.

The Pioneer caught up with the focused and friendly performer to talk about the tour, reality TV and the return of the 80s.

Have you been to North Wales before?
I love Llandudno! I passed my driving test there.
I failed three times and I read a story about a woman from there who had failed hers about 100 times but finally passed with this special driving school. So me and my mum came up for a week and I passed - fond memories of Llandudno!

What can we expect from this tour?
It's a full on live show. We've got a full band, dancers, and I'll be singing around 20 songs.
We've been together as a band for about nine years. We have a new guitarist who is fantastic, we're playing some 80s pop then a lot of rock stuff and American RnB stuff - it's a pretty schizophrenic band.
I've had a different kind of success in America and a different kind of success here - there's something for everybody.
I'll be doing two or three of my favourite covers as well. One is Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon. I played it in a festival before going in the jungle - it went down a dream. It was a fantastic audience. Everybody seems to know the words to that song for some reason.

Do you like to mix it up with different styles?
If you interview anybody and ask them what they have on their iPod it will be varied. Every musician has to be.
There is music is for all different times. I don't know about you but on a Sunday I like to put on Heart of Magic to catch up on the oldies - I'm showing my age now.
But on a Saturday night I like to put on Radio 1 and listen to the DJs. Sometime I put on some Empire Of The Sun.
I've been asking fans to send in their top ten favourites on the website - it's amazing what people love.

Why has your music continued to endure?
The 80s was such a fantastic time for music. People are kind of going back to the 80s with bands like La Roux, and I keep on hearing songs and think 'That sounds like Human League'. It's all coming back.
People are even bringing back the fashion - I can't believe I'm seeing leg warmers and shoulder pads. It was a great time for everybody.

How do you feel about playing live?
It's the best part of the music business. Writing songs is fantastic because you get to be creative; production and recording can get a little stressful with the producers and all the musicians.
But when on stage and performing live, and you see the reaction, it's all worth it. That's what it's all about.

So no nerves then about going back on stage in the UK?
Not at all. I haven't performed in England for 10 years. I've been in Germany, America, Canada, but unfortunately my albums haven't been released in Britain. Going in the jungle shows a lot of people I'm still alive and kicking.

You've been in the jungle and taken part in Celebrity Wife Swap - what attracts you to these reality shows?
Because with gigging and working and living abroad.
Last couple of years after some great TV shows worked towards this tour - letting people know I'm back in the business.
Big help showing people who I really am.

What does the future hold for Sam Fox?
I've just done a cover of a song by Debbie Harry with Sabrina - we met on a plane after a show in Poland.
There is this tour which is pretty full on, then a few weeks off. Then we're taking it to Germany, possibly America and Japan. As long as people keep on buying the tickets.
It's going to be a big party. I know there are seats in a lot of these places but I want to see them up on their feet. All those memories will come flooding back.
