NORTH Wales firefighters are urging residents to exercise caution after a spate of grass fires.

Seven Gwynedd forces were called to battle against two blazes on Monday that spread over a combined total of 1,200 square metres.

One of the incidents occurred at Bangor Mountain, where a fire lit deliberately to clear gorse and bracken grew out of control.

Senior Fire Safety Manager Richard Fairhead wants landowners to be extra cautious when initiating controlled burnings, ensuring care guidelines are followed and notice given to authorities before lighting fires.

“These are fires we do not generally attend although occasionally they can be very visible and attract the attention of the public”, he said.

Fires like this place tremendous pressure on resources, with fire-fighters often tied up for a considerable length of time trying to bring these fires under control.”

Authorities are asking landowners clearing land to ensure they have the appropriate equipment and manpower to keep fires under control, as well as being prepared should the fire get out of control.

Landowners should inform fire service control on 01745 343800 of the location of the burn to prevent time and resources being wasted by the fire service attending a controlled fire.
