COUNCILLORS who stop Anglesey council from improving its performance should consider stepping aside before the Welsh Assembly steps in, according to its leader.
Councillor Clive McGregor said that questions about managing director David Bowles’ living arrangements were not constructive.
“Some members seem intent on block the way forward when the managing director is doing the hard work of putting the council on the right track,” he said.
“The message is clear: if you don’t want the council to succeed, there is no need for you in the council. If we don’t improve, then the Assembly will step in to take over the reigns.”
New Local Government Minister Carl Sargeant said in a recent BBC interview that he would not longer tolerate behaviour that would hinder the council delivering public services.
Councillor McGregor added that Mr Bowles would introduce reforms to the council’s structure and accountability procedures before the full council in the coming year.
His comments follow a letter to the island’s councillor from Mr Bowles, who explained that he rented a property which he later discovered was let by former councillor and officer John Arthur Jones.
He says he informed two senior council officers about later concerns over planning permissions related to the site, and left the property.
Mr Bowles said the councillors who had raised the issue had engaged in malicious gossip and added: "I would contrast the very open way in which I have handled this matter with those who do not even have the moral fibre to come and raise any issues of concern directly with me.”
