SPEAKING Welsh could be good for you health, according to research.

A Bangor University team researching the benefits of being bilingual says there is evidence that it can help prevent memory loss among the elderly.

Dr Enlli Thomas from the said: “We already know that language processing is one of the most complex activities that our brains carry out; running two parallel language systems throughout life has had positive benefits in a number of ways."

She added: “There is indeed evidence from Canada that being bilingual may provide some protection against age-related memory loss more then 700 people aged between 2 and 80 to assess the benefits of being bilingual.

The university is looking for 700 people aged between 2 and 80 to take part in further research being bilingual could benefit the brain.

The £750,000 study includes simple language tests and then carry out some on-screen puzzles and is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.

The researchers are looking for people who grew up in Welsh-speaking homes, bilingual families or English-speaking households.
