A BANGOR man has been airlifted to hospital after falling while walking in Snowdonia.

The 22-year-old student slipped nearly 300ft while on the Black Ladders route, near Carnedd Dafydd, on Thursday.

Emergency services were called at 2.30pm yesterday, and the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team was called, along with an RAF Valley helicopter.
An RAF Valley spokesman said the climber had been very lucky to escape with an ankle injury.

“The protector screws used on an ice climb are not necessarily meant to stop you falling, but decrease the velocity of the fall,” he said.

“They didn’t do their job properly as they came loose but they did manage to slow him down.”

The man was about five feet from the summit when he slipped and fell past his climbing partner, from Llanberis.

He was airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd and his uninjured climbing partner was helped down the mountain by the mountain rescue team.
