A CAERNARFON bodybuilder is celebrating after finishing in the top six of his catagory in the Mr Universe competition.
Derek Jones, 51, finished fifth in the Masters over 50 category of the competition which took place in Southport.
The championship, which celebrates the efforts of bodybuilders around the world, is contested between national champions.
Derek won the Mr England title to qualify in what has been a bumper year of success.
“This year I’ve finished first in the UK BFF, Central Britain and UK Championships” he said.
“Just getting to the Universe title was something special.
“It was really emotional getting placed in the top six, it was a hell of an achievement, as anyone who knows about bodybuilding will say.”
The top six finish means Derek can go on to compete in the World Bodybuilding Championships in Malta next June.
Derek took up the sport twenty years ago afer having to give up football.
He puts his success down to training hard at local gyms in Caernarfon and
Bangor, as well as constantly altering a healthy diet to get into top shape for competitions.
Derek’s efforts have led to Health and Fitness magazine running a profile of his achievements.
He said that his main proirity is to remain fit and healthy, but hopes to continue competing in bodybuilding contest with the support of his fellow trainers and family.
“I want to thank my partner Carol and son Gary for all their help and support, I couldn’t have done it without them.” he said.
