GWYNEDD’s grappling hero said goodbye to his hometown fans on Tuesday after signing with the world’s biggest wrestling company.

Barri Griffiths wowed fans at Y Ganolfan,  Porthmadog, with two victories, and will soon be on his way to the WWE.

The 6ft 6, 20 stone powerhouse has signed a developmental contract with the company, and could soon face global superstars John Cena, the Undertaker and Shawn Michaels.

The 27-year-old from Tremadog is relishing the prospect of facing the world’s best wrestlers.

“I’m really excited. All the wrestlers in the WWE are of a really high standard, and I’m looking forward to working my way to the top.”

“To sign a WWE contract and perhaps become the first ever Welsh WWE champion is a massive opportunity.”

He added: “I’ve not met Vince McMahon, the WWE Chairman yet, but when I do I’m hoping to make a good impression.”

Barri, known to millions as Goliath on Sky TV’s Gladiators, will continue his training at Florida Champion Wrestling, which is owned by the WWE.

“I’ve met FCW head trainer Dusty Rhodes already, and he’s a real character and a true legend,” he said.

“They have great coaches there and there isn’t a better place to learn.”

The man mountain promised his fans that he would not lose touch with his roots.

“My Welshness is very important to me and I will proudly represent Wales all over the world.”

Barri beat the near 400lb American Avalanche in his first contest, and sent the crowd home happy by winning the battle royale.

Orig Williams, Barri’s manager, thanked North Wales’ wrestling fans for their support.

“The support for Barri from Porthmadog and the rest of Wales has been miraculous, and I hope that they continue to support him when he goes to America,” he said.

“Barri has done himself, his parents and his country proud - he’s a true giant of a man.”
