ANGLESEY Council leader Clive McGregor has welcomed the government’s choice of managing director.
Welsh local government Dr Brian Gibbons minister has appointed David Bowles to turn around the council, after last month’s highly critical audit report.
Council leader Clive McGregor explained that the controversial appointment would benefit the island.
“We support the appointment 100%”,” he said.
“Mr Bowles has the qualifications to move the council forward.”
He added: “I look forward to working in partnership with Mr Bowles to aid the process of corporate recovery.
“We clearly have a great deal of hard work before us, both officers and members, in order to turn this Authority around.”
A number of Welsh language campaigners have criticised appointing a non Welsh-speaker to the role.
Cllr McGregor explained that Mr Bowles was the best choice for the job.
“Ideally, the candidate appointed would be able to speak Welsh,” he said, “but there no one in Wales with the required qualifications to do the job and who could speak Welsh.
“We will obviously work to support Mr Bowles in respect of the Welsh language whilst also safeguarding the Authority’s strong Welsh ethos.”
The council is under pressure to improve or the Welsh Assembly Government will take control of the island’s affairs.
