A FOOTBALLER from Denbighshire has criticised Joey Barton for his views on women's football and their involvement in the professional game, calling him an "absolute muppet".

Sophie Bancroft, of Rhyl and who plays for Denbigh Town, said that "women are doing better than him and he doesn't like it" in a tweet on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The tweet follows ex-England player Barton's controversial opinions on women and women's football on the platform, where has has denounced the women's game and their punditry.

Barton has been accused of sexism and misogyny after remarks about women outside football, often using stereotypes, and had recently said on a podcast that women were "taking away opportunities" from men in the sport.

Who does this prick actually think he is? “They’re taking opportunities away” no mate women are finally being allowed opportunity! Women are doing better than him & he doesn’t like it. That’s his problem. Absolute muppet 🤬 pic.twitter.com/UPDHEkXQLJ

In response, Denbigh Town's Bancroft tweeted: "Who does this p**** actually think he is?

"“They’re taking opportunities away” no mate women are finally being allowed opportunity!

"Women are doing better than him and he doesn’t like it. That’s his problem. Absolute muppet."

After gaining a lot of support for her tweet, Barton then replied to Bancroft calling her "deluded" and saying she should "get the kettle on".
